Lin Shao was trained as a nuclear physicist during his B.S. studies at Peking University (1992-1997). Later, he switched to accelerator-based materials studies, ion beam modification, and doping in semiconductors for his Ph.D. and postdoctoral research at the University of Houston (1997-2001, 2001-2004). He joined Los Alamos National Laboratory, focusing on cracking and controlled cleavage of ion-irradiated semiconductors (2004 to 2006). He joined Texas A&M University as an Assistant Professor in 2006, and focused on material failures in reactor environments. His research over the past two decades has focused on (1) accelerator technology developments; (2) radiation materials science spanning metals and ceramics of various dimensions (from nanostructured to bulk) and various structural engineering forms (from nanolayered to nanograined); (3) bridging the gap between ion and neutron irradiation, a key issue in using ion irradiation to emulate neutron damage; (4) materials synthesis and screening for applications under extreme conditions; (5) multiscale modeling for fundamental understanding using ab initio, molecular dynamics simulations, and rate theory calculations. He has graduated 24 Ph.D. students, published about 300 journal papers, and held 17 US patents.
